PCRD Holds a specialized workshop on the Critical thinking and its integration in the education process

In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the PCRD held a specialized workshop last Thursday, Nov.17, 2011 at the Shepherds hotel in Bethlehem.

The said workshop emphasized the critical thinking and ways of integrating this approach in the education process as a partial fulfillment of the critical thinking project that the PCRD has implemented in partnership with the German Hanns Seidel Foundation. Besides school teachers and superintendents, the workshop was attended by the director of the Education Directorate of Bethlehem Mr. Sami Mroa, Dr. Michel Hanania the facilitator of the training sessions of Bethlehem, and Dr. Walid Shomaly the Executive Director of the PCRD.

Dr. Shomaly initiated the workshop and welcomed the participants, and emphasized the importance of the project to the society in general and to the education process in particular, and sustained that the PCRD always tries to meet the needs of the community. He added that the aim of this workshop was to get educators involved in the process and keep them updated so that schools and universities nationwide can benefit from it. Dr. Shomaly emphasized the importance of instilling the critical thinking approach in the minds of students, and to have them grow out of learning by rote, and enable them utilize the information they acquire.

In his turn, the Director of the Education Directorate Mr. Sami Mroa expressed sincere thanks to the PCRD for efforts exerted in implementing the critical thinking project, and that all sessions held were for the interest of the education process which would positively reflect on the students` performance. Mr. Mroa emphasized that theory sessions should be accompanied with practical ones so that it would become highly efficient. 

Then, Dr. Hanania presented a paper on the critical and analytical thinking, and sustained that thinking is an intellectual process that everyone can practice throughout different stages of age. Dr. Hanania highlighted the basic and upper skills of critical thinking and the different definitions of the critical thinking. Dr. Hanania also stated the different criteria of the critical thinking i.e. clarity, veracity association, accuracy, depth, and logic in addition to the different stages of the critical thinking. He also discussed the indicators that prove that a certain individual has utilized the critical thinking approach. He also stated that the aim of that workshop was to give a brief description of the project and what issues the training sessions have already highlighted.

Dr. Hanania mentioned that the critical thinking will positively upgrade the proficiency of teachers which will positively reflect on the students` performance . Then the floor was open for discussion, where the participants commended on the role of the PCRD in implementing this project and gave remarks on the different stages of the project.

Finally, the participants emphasized that practicum should be combined with the theory, and that such project should be sustainable so that it will have a better impact on the performance of both teachers and students given that we live in the era of technology revolution.
